Professor Samuel Boakye Dampare is a distinguished geologist, nuclear scientist, and institutional leader who has served as Director-General of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) since February 2022. He also serves as Ghana’s National Liaison Officer to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), advancing international cooperation and supporting Ghana’s Nuclear Power Programme. A Professor of Nuclear Earth Sciences and Chief Research Scientist, he brings nearly three decades of experience in scientific research, energy policy, natural resource management, and institutional leadership.
Professor Dampare has built an accomplished career spanning academia, research, consultancy, and public-sector leadership. He has held senior scientific and management roles within GAEC and contributed to regional and international initiatives through the IAEA and the African Union Commission (AUC). His expertise covers nuclear earth sciences, geochemistry, uranium geology, isotope hydrology, environmental sciences, and nuclear applications for sustainable development.
He holds a BSc (Hons) and an MPhil in Geology from the University of Ghana and a PhD in Geology from Okayama University, Japan, where he also completed a prestigious post-doctoral fellowship. He has received several awards and academic distinctions.
As Director-General, Professor Dampare has led key institutional initiatives, including establishing and launching the GAEC Research, Innovation and Development Fund (GRIDFund) during the Commission’s 60th anniversary. The Fund supports research excellence, innovation, technology development, and scientific capacity building.
As a Board Member of Nuclear Power Ghana (NPG), he provides strategic oversight and technical expertise supporting the introduction of Ghana’s first nuclear power plant. He also serves on the Governing Council of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and is a member of the African Union Commission’s AMREC Technical Working Group.
