All Ghanaians are/would be affected by the establishment of the nuclear power in one way or another. Their opinions are therefore with regards to going “nuclear” is therefore of utmost importance. Nuclear Power Ghana contracted the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) of the University of Ghana to assess the extent to which businesses and households in Ghana perceive, are informed on and are interested in the nuclear power programme of the country. This survey forms a key activity for Phase 1 of the nuclear power programme. It is estimated that about 2,000 households, 200 businesses and 20 focus groups across the 16 regions of Ghana will be surveyed. Results from the survey will help NPG improve its stakeholder involvement and sensitization programme.

Media Engagement

NPG continues to conduct media engagement programs including training workshops organized to train media personnel from multiple media houses across the country. The training aims to develop competent media teams with the requisite expertise to effectively communicate matters regarding nuclear power.

Industrial Involvement

A nuclear power project is multi-disciplinary project that involves the supply of goods and services from a wide range of industries. As such, NPG supported the Nuclear Power Institute of GAEC and the Statistical Services in appraising the industrial landscape of Ghana to identify possible areas for local involvement. A number of industries in the engineering, manufacturing, civil construction, heavy equipment handling, and transportation fields were visited and accessed. The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI)and the Ghana Institute of Engineering (GhIE) were instrumental in facilitating the data acquisition and site visits to the surveyed industries. The survey identified areas where local companies can be involved in the construction of a nuclear power plant.

The survey also highlighted areas where there is a deficiency in local expertise. Further studies and a number of companies will be trained in meeting nuclear standards to position themselves as suppliers of goods or services for the nuclear power project.
